LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp. said on Monday its new Xbox 360 will run video games developed for the earlier generation of its gaming machine, an enticement to get fans who have already spent hundreds of dollars on older Xbox games to purchase new hardware.
The world’s largest software maker also announced a deal to feature Japanese publisher Square Enix Co. Ltd.’s “Final Fantasy” games, which up to now have been a cornerstone of rival Sony Corp.’s PS2 franchise.
Microsoft, which unveiled the Xbox 360 last week, will have between 25 and 40 game titles for the machine by the end of this year, with more than 160 games under development.
I posted one before that turned out to be a fake. Looks like the real thing is here finally. It was announced yesterday I think but I wasn’t online any yesterday. So it’s coming in via Blogs of War this morning:
Microsoft threw an XBOX launch party called XBOX 360 Revealed in L.A. last night and someone snapped a photo. I wish it looked as cool as this fake. The camera in the photo looks pretty interesting and may figure into the next version of XBOX Live.
Microsoft Corp. has been highly secretive about whether it will release its next Xbox video-game console this year or next. Apparently, Bill Gates didn’t get the memo.
Speaking yesterday to a national convention of business editors and writers, the Microsoft chairman seemed to confirm widespread industry speculation about the timing of the release, referring to plans to ship the console “this year.”
The remark, apparently inadvertent, came as Gates talked about consumer adoption of high-definition displays, which Microsoft is incorporating into its strategy as it takes on market leader Sony Corp. and its dominant PlayStation franchise.
That’s awesome! I smell another Christmas release. Hope I have enough money later on in the year to pick one up.
Games can cost anywhere from five to thirty million dollars to develop these days. While the prices are going up few games will maintain that high prices for long. Most will likely drop in price quite rapidly after the initial post-launch sales flood.
There’s tons of information coming out now about the next gen Xbox console. There may have even been a picture of it leaked. If this really is a pic of the neat little console, I think they did a nice job with it. It’s very sleek and visually appealing. I’d have gone with a black/green theme again, but white/green is OK too. I sure hope Xbox 360 can play original Xbox games…
